The history of the city of Trikala during the Ottoman reign is reflected in buildings, such as the restored Ottoman twin bath. Of the three baths recorded in Trikala in the 17th century, only one is referred to as a double bath, used by both men and women at the same time. Travellers refer to it as the “Osman Shah Bey Hammam”, as it belonged to the complex founded by the Ottoman governor of the Trikala Sandzak. Its construction dates back to the mid-16th century at about the same time as the neighbouring mosque, designed by the renowned architect Sinan.

In the end of the 19th century the bath was converted to a two storey construction in order to house the central building of the city’s prison which operated there until 2006. The Ottoman bath was unveiled only in 2011 during trial trenches in the ground level of the building.
